Standard AC fuses rely on the zero-crossing current oscillation to extinguish electrical arcs. In a solar DC circuit, the current is continuous, making arcs highly persistent and dangerous. Class gPV fuses are explicitly engineered with specific sand and element configurations to break low-magnitude overcurrents common in photovoltaic arrays rapidly.
According to IEC guidelines, the rating of the fuse link should be calculated as at least 1.56 times the Short Circuit Current (Isc) of the connected PV modules. This safety multiplier ensures the fuse will not fatigue or nuisance-trip due to irradiance fluctuation and high ambient operating temperatures.
